UTM naming convention guide

  • utm_source — platform or referrer (google, facebook, newsletter)
  • utm_medium — marketing medium (cpc, social, email, affiliate)
  • utm_campaign — specific campaign (spring_sale, product_launch)
  • utm_term — paid keyword
  • utm_content — differentiate similar links (banner_a, story_ad)

Use lowercase and underscores. Be consistent across campaigns so your analytics stay clean.

🔒Your data is processed locally in your browser and is not uploaded.

How it works

1. Set defaults (optional) — Enter default UTM source, medium, and campaign to apply when fields are empty.

2. Add URLs — Enter base URLs and UTM parameters in the table. Click "Add row" for more URLs, or paste a list.

3. Import from CSV — Use the Import button to load a CSV with columns: url, source, medium, campaign, term, content.

4. Review generated URLs — The tool shows the full tagged URL for each row. Duplicate URLs are highlighted.

5. Copy or export — Copy all URLs to clipboard, or download as CSV or XLSX for your campaign management system.

Examples

Google Ads campaign:

  • Base URL: https://example.com/product
  • Source: google
  • Medium: cpc
  • Campaign: spring_sale
  • Result: https://example.com/product?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=spring_sale

Newsletter with multiple links:

  • Track which links get the most clicks in your email platform

Facebook campaign with variations:

  • Source: facebook, medium: social
  • Content parameter for A/B testing: video_ad vs carousel_ad

Frequently asked questions

What are UTM parameters?

UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are tags added to URLs that help analytics tools like Google Analytics identify where traffic comes from. They track source, medium, campaign, and more.

Can I create many URLs at once?

Yes — add as many rows as needed, or import a CSV file with hundreds of URLs. The tool handles bulk operations efficiently.

Can I import from CSV?

Yes. Your CSV should have headers: url, source, medium, campaign, term, content. The tool maps these to UTM parameters automatically.

Can I export to XLSX?

Yes — download your URLs as Excel (.xlsx) or CSV format for use in campaign management tools.

What happens to existing query parameters?

The tool preserves existing parameters in your base URL and appends UTM parameters. If a parameter already exists, the UTM value takes precedence.

Are there naming conventions for UTMs?

Use lowercase and underscores consistently. Common sources: google, facebook, newsletter. Common mediums: cpc, social, email, affiliate. Consistency is key for clean analytics.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. All processing happens in your browser. Your URLs and campaign data never leave your device.
